Rector's Message

"That All May Be One" John 17:21

Welcome to St. John's Episcopal Church, which has stood on Fishers Island for more than 127 years. We are a summer chapel open to all who come to this island, who worship God in the beauty of holiness and associate themselves with this place and with other pilgrims on their spiritual search. St. John's is open during the summer months and welcomes today, as it has for many years, men, women, and children of all faiths. Each Sunday during the summer season, we gather for worship at the 8 and 10 am services of either Holy Eucharist or Morning Prayer. Our junior choir provides dynamic music for these Sunday services. Guest preachers often visit St. John's and accomplished soloists and musicians also perform during the summer months, including those visiting to take part in our annual organ recital. A visiting storyteller provides fun and entertainment for the whole family each season. Our weekly theological study group focuses on a chosen text which culminates in the visit of a distinguished speaker.

The welcoming community of St. John's provides a ministry of hospitality and outreach on this island home. Most active as a sanctuary in the summer, we are committed to supporting the spiritual life of the island through all seasons. We have a vibrant outreach program, coordinated by the church Vestry which manages a number of separate outreach initiatives to support the winter community, the school, or fund special programs, including the Sanger Fund, the management of the Fishers Island cemeteries, and the Scholarship program for Fishers Island graduates attending tertiary education, supporting them through four years of college and two years of graduate school.

Please browse through this website, read about the history of the church, the life of our summer congregation, and the vision for our future. Learn more about this dynamic seasonal chapel committed to the radical hospitality made known in Christ and know that you are always welcome here at St. John's where all may be one.

With peace and blessings,
Michael
